There's a good chance that while most of us are firing up the grill this Labor Day weekend, someone in our families, or someone we work with, is helping a resident get dressed, double-checking a medication list, or sitting with a patient who just needs a little company. That's the part of healthcare nobody puts on a poster. It's also the part we think about most on a holiday built to honor work.

So while the weekend gets going, we wanted to stop and say thank you. Not in a "we appreciate our amazing team" kind of way — in a real way, to real people, for the specific things they do.

CHP's Appreciation

Most doctors see patients in an office. Ours don't. Our nurse practitioners and physicians spend their days driving from facility to facility, because the whole point of what we do is to show up where the patient already is — no ride needed, no waiting room, no hassle getting out of bed for an appointment.

That's harder than it sounds. It means:

• Building a schedule around a patient's life, not the other way around.
• Actually remembering who someone is, visit after visit, instead of glancing at a chart for the first time.
• Logging real miles across Lincoln, Omaha, Fremont, and everywhere in between, just to make sure someone gets seen.

It's a slower, more personal kind of medicine. It also happens to be a lot more work – and while nobody sees our schedulers and care coordinators, they're the reason a provider ends up at the right door, at the right time, with the right information already in hand. It's a lot of quiet problem-solving that nobody claps for. This is us clapping for it.

And the Staff We Get to Work Alongside

We also want to say something to the people we don't technically employ, but couldn't do this work without: the staff at every senior living community and skilled nursing facility we partner with.

The CNAs and aides who help someone eat breakfast, get dressed, and feel like a person, not a patient. The nurses who catch the small stuff — a little more confusion than usual, a look that's not quite right — before it turns into something bigger. The rehab teams pushing patients gently, day after day, toward getting their independence back. The activity coordinators and administrators who somehow keep an entire community feeling like a community.

None of that stops for a long weekend. Someone is doing all of it on Saturday, on Sunday, and on Labor Day itself — probably instead of being at their own cookout.

Honestly, the best part of this job is that it doesn't feel like our team and their team. It feels like one team. A CNA mentions that a resident seemed "off" today. A nurse calls before something turns into an ER visit. A provider actually picks up the phone because there's already a relationship there. That back-and-forth is the whole reason patients get to heal, and age, with some dignity and comfort, wherever home happens to be for them.

So, Really — Thank You

To our own team, and to every aide, nurse, and coordinator at the communities we get to work with: we see you. Labor Day was made for people like you — the ones who do the steady, unglamorous, absolutely essential work that keeps everything else standing. Enjoy the weekend if you get it. If you don't, know that we noticed, and we're grateful.
